FlexFridays: Space Explorations and Astrobiology!

Dr. Jessica Creamer will be giving Cloud FlexFriday students a short talk about how NASA looks for signs of life in the universe. From the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars rovers to the newest technologies that are trying to fly to the ocean worlds of Enceladus and Europa.

Dr. Jessica Creamer went to graduate school at the University of Kansas to study pharmaceutical chemistry. Her research focused on how to transport medicines safely within developing countries. She developed technologies that could work in areas where there was limited running water and electricity. This research led her to a job at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory where a similar technology was being used to test for life on other planets. She worked on a team to create an instrument suite called OWLS - Ocean Worlds Life Surveyor. OWLS combines microscopy and chemical analysis to search for life in overlapping ways.
